Terry Harvey-Chadwick set up his own business as a sole trader after taking voluntary redundancy in 2011 from the Cumbrian secondary school where he was teaching science. He used to teach all science subjects up to GCSE and Biology to A Level. As much as possible he used to include unusual demonstrations in his science lessons…… and swords. You’d be surprised how useful a sword can be in lessons, and not just to keep the kids under control. He still, occasionally, does a stint in Cumbrian secondary schools as a supply teacher, just to keep his hand in.
Tired of the restrictions of the three part lesson plan and endless marking, Terry decided to start up Fun Science, originally as a supplier of science themed birthday parties. Not one to waste an opportunity he also turned his Viking re-enactment hobby into a business as Midgard Living History, bringing Vikings into Cumbrian primary school classrooms.
SV Educational Services was born slightly later as a way to tie both of these differing strands together, especially as Terry started to acquire an appreciation of how these two supposedly very different subjects actually came together very well. History of science is rather neglected in schools and, when it is mentioned, is usually totally misrepresented and inaccurate, and is rarely seen at larger STEM events. As such he is developing a series of characters to give displays and workshops about various periods in history, with a focus throughout on how science was important, even when it was not recognised as a method in itself.
During the last three years, Terry has appeared on TV as Professor Boffin on Britain’s Got Talent, and the Science Viking on Some Boffin’s Telling Jokes, as well as being an extra in a feature film, and a model for a book illustration. He has appeared in various guises in other TV and radio productions, at history and science festivals, schools, churches and museums all over the country and abroad.
Terry is a member of Equity and, as such, is covered for up to £10million Public Liability Insurance for his historical performances. For his science shows he has his own PLI of £2million. Larger Viking re-enactments booked through SV Educational Services are covered for up to £5million PLI through The Vikings! national re-enactment society. Insurance details are available upon request when a booking is confirmed.
Through his supply teaching agency Terry has a full DBS certificate. However, as none of the activities supplied by SV Educational Services are defined as regulated activities by the DBS agency, we do not supply our DBS details for our normal activities. However, if the details of the booking bring it under the DBS regulated activities definition, we can supply our DBS number, date it was provided, and an up-to-date check can be provided at the customers expense via the DBS Update Service.
